We recently and finally visited the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Veluwe Park. it’s been on our Wishlist for a while now and with the good weather we decided this was the right moment to go!
We parked the car at the entrance of the Kröller-Müller park. I had brought my own gravel bike and Monica used one of the 1800 (!!!) freely available bikes in the park. Honestly, this is a fantastic option. The museum is about 5 kilometres from the carport and although you can also buy a ticket to bring the car into the park, when the weather is as good as it was… going by bike is the best possible way to spend the day there. And many other people did the same.
After a nice short ride we parked our bikes at the bike-parking near the museum and we entered the Kröller-Müller Museum. The museum is a big area with several galleries inside and a large (very large) sculpture-garden attached to the museum. You can only enter this via the museum so only buying tickets to the park and not the museum will not get you into the sculpture garden.
The museum is known for its large collection of Vincent Van Gogh paintings and its history is quite rich as Helene Kröller-Müller bought her first Van Gogh painting in 1908. After collecting art for several years she decided to donate the collection to the people of The Netherlands and have a museum made on the Veluwe-park, which is the park that now exists and was opened in 1938, shortly before Helene passed away.
Besides the large collection of Van Gogh, the museum also has paintings and art installations by Monet, Mondriaan, Picasso and many other painters and artists. The collection is big and the building is an interesting modern design with lots of light and white walls.
We spent a lot of time in the museum, but we also wanted to see the sculpture garden, so after a good lunch in the garden’s restaurant we walked in the garden. There is an interesting art-installation there called ‘Kijk uit’ or ‘Attention’ by the artist Krijn Giezen. It’s a lookout point 300 steps high. It takes a while to get fully up to the highest point, but the view is indeed very spectacular. After we got down again, it turned out we were there just in time as the hosts. of the garden and museum were slowly starting to close the park down for the day, starting with this art installation (I can imagine as it takes a long time getting up and down from this piece of art).
So we wandered around in the rest of the garden for a while until we finally exited the garden. Monica then rested for a while in park while I took the gravel bike for a short ride to check out the rest of the Kröller-Müller park. We ended the day with dinner at the restaurant in the park and then drove back home. It’s a fantastic park and I’m ever so happy to have seen such an impressive collection of Van Gogh paintings!
