As I mentioned on my Photography-page, I’ve used loads of cameras and systems. It’s a hobby and part of the fun is trying out stuff. But in time I grew fond of the Fujifilm concept. Both the X-Pro series and the X-T series have a great hand-on feel and give the feeling of actual control through buttons and dials and not to much of a ‘digital’ or clinical feeling. And in fact I (oddly) still have every camera I bought in this Fujifilm-set. Here is my current setup.
APS-C Interchangeable lens cameras
- X-T4: My main workhorse, I love it! Feels like it’s built like a tank. The flippy screen also rotates inwards to avoid chimping (the constant checking of the photos you just took).
- X-Pro1: Still a good backup camera. The ‘Leica-like’ experience of a rangefinder (although it’s mostly only for the OVF/EVF viewfinder style) lured me away from my Canon setup and I really like it still. The slower handling of the camera also is a good exercise in composition and taking your time.
- X-Pro2: I really loved this camera. It still works, but I used it so much and intensively during my time a s concert photographer that it’s not as reliable anymore. Also build quality feels less than the X-Pro1. The shooting experience with an X-Pro camera is still great, but not always practical and the direction that Fujifilm is going with the X-Pro line was not in line with my photography style, so I made the switch to the X-T4.
Fixed lens cameras
- X100: Still a good working camera, the OG of the Fujifilm line. Button layout not the best, autofocus has much improved since, but it works every time
- X100F: Better button layout and autofocus than the X100, but has problems with EVF. It’s a camera I often have in ma bag with me just in case, even if now I have to use the rear screen more than I like.
Lensen for all and any of the interchangeable lens cameras:
- Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4 Great lens for a wide view and with a very small minimum focus distance does great work as a sort of macro-lens too.
- Fujinon XF 18mm f/2.0 A fantastic basic lens. So small and light there’s always room in a bag for it and performs great for general photography.
- Fujinon xf 35mm f/1.4 My very first lens I bought back in the day with the X-pro1 and it will never go away. It’s survived trips, vacations, concert photography and just about anything I threw at it and it works like a charm (even though it’s been handled rough as well).
- Fujinon XF 56mm f/1.2 A super good lens in low light (which made it terrific at concerts). Now used a bit less, but still good to have around.
- Fujinon XF 90mm f/2.0 Much like the 56mm this too is great at low light and that also makes it good as a (mini) tele-lens in the evenings.
- Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 My basic all purpose lens, great for travel to have all basics covered except of longer distances. I sold it once and soon came to regret it. When I got the X-T4 in 2024, I also bought a news 18-55. With its metal housing it’s just a fantastic lens!
- Fujinon XF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 My newest addition, looking forward to putting it to work.
- Samyang 12mm f/2 NCS CS, a manual focus lens that I mainly bought for astro-photography.
Bags. As with so meny other photographers I strugle with bags. Too small not everything fits. Too big and you’re likely to bring absolutely everything you have available and carry around a ton of weight. The best advice I’ve taken recently is to have the camera on my while walking around and have a small slingbag for one or two extra lenses. That takes care of the hiking part and with a good insert for my backpack I can pack most of my gear for travel in a normal backpack.
Camera bags:
- Ona The Bowery – Small shoulderbag for a hike
- Bellroy Venture 6L Sling – Small slingbag for a camera and an extra lens
- Lowepro backpack – Backpack that carries the full gear
- Billingham Hadley Pro – Shoulderbag that fits mostly the full gear
- Brandless padded insert, fits into backpacks
Tripods:
- …
- Smallrig VT-20 Aluminum Mini tripod, perfect for travel as it’s light and small
Computer
- For editing I have a Mac Mini with a M2 processor
- I use Adobe Lightroom and occasionally Photoshop for editing
Future desires:
- Slightly larger sling bag
- Maybe some studio lights?
