It has been a long time since we visited a concert since I quit concert photography. I also wanted to distance myself from it a bit for a while. But I do still enjoy music and started to miss the feeling of a live concert, and since we had never visited the Ziggo Dome and John Legend was scheduled there for last Monday, we decided to take the plunge and get tickets! As my gig-photography has been retired no photography accreditation, no camera(s) with me, just the concert… but I do of course have an iPhone and the urge of taking photos hasn’t completely left me 😉
John Legend is currently touring with his ‘Get Lifted’ album that’s 20 years old now. In the last few weeks we we had the album on several times so at least the songs wouldn’t be a complete surprise and the excitement was pretty big when on Monday we got in the car at 17:00 and set course to Amsterdam. Great weather, John Legend on the stereo one last time before the gig and not too much traffic on the way.
And so we arrived well on time, found a great place in the hall (the Ziggo Dome is a fantastic venue by the way) and now only had to wait for the concert that started perfectly at 20:30.
No opening acts tonight, just the John Legend show, but that was amazing. We got all the songs: Let’s Get Lifted. Used To love U, She Don’t Have To Know, Ordinary People, So High and all the way to Live It Up. In between John declared it’s love to Amsterdam several times, told stories on how the album came to be, how he worked with several artists including Kanye West and Will.I.Am and the meaning of Ordinary People which is basically about his parents.
In the end we got an encore including of course ‘All Of Me‘ where all of the audience joined in. A perfect ending. As said in the beginning it has been a long time but this was a perfect restart and made me want to go and visit some more gigs! We’ll keep our eyes open for the next one.
