Yesterday after work I went out for a short walk, hoping to get some photos of Scottish Highlanders (better known as Highland Cows). These long-haired, reddish-brown cows are a common sight in the fields in the north of the Netherlands.
There’s usually a small group not far from home, so I grabbed the camera with the telephoto lens and set out. Sure enough, the cows were exactly where I expected them to be. No long search needed, and I got a just a few quick shots. Before long, though, they lost interest and turned their backs on me — not the most photogenic pose.
I returned to my hike along the canal, keeping an eye out for other subjects. A bit further on, I came across some alpacas. The new owners of a nearby farm have recently brought them in, and although they’re normally tucked away at the far end of the field, this time they were right up front. Ironically, that meant I had to step back instead of relying on the telephoto lens als I hand’t brought another lens with me.
After a few alpaca shots, I moved on and spotted some cormorants (aalscholvers in Dutch). Their perches weren’t the cleanest, so I had to work around the clutter to get a halfway decent frame.
That was about it for wildlife. After roughly 7 km I made my way back home. Lately I’ve been enjoying these walks more and more. Even if not every walk results in great photos, carrying the camera makes me pay closer attention to my surroundings and that’s a win already.
